Managing employees in later life and helping employees retire successfullyIt is widely reported that in most organisations conversations about retirement between manager and employees don’t take place until the last moment. Also when they do take place, that managers, especially younger ones, are perceived by retirees as ill equipped to help them with their concerns. The demise of the default retirement age by October 2011, with last retirement notices by April 2011, raises the importance of these conversations for the future and also the necessity of updating the organisation’s retirement policy. As a result Laterlife Learning has developed two services to assist
HR and managers within organisations. These are: ‘Developing a Flexible Retirement policy’ which are outlined below. More information is available on both these services in the form of service descriptions which describe the content. Just complete the normal Retirement Courses Business Enquiry form but in the Additional information section please request our 'Manager Services' information. ‘Managing later life employees workshop’ This interactive one day workshop provides an understanding for Managers and HR staff of all aspects of managing older employees. It enables the delegates to understand where the organisation is in relation to managing older employees effectively and to contribute to and effectively implement the organisation’s retirement policy. It equips managers to discuss retirement with employees at all stages of their career and to know the resources they have to draw on. In particular it enables them to assist employees to approach thinking about retirement objectively, rather than emotionally, so as to achieve the best outcomes for both employee and organisation. ‘Developing a Flexible Retirement policy’ The objective is to assist the organisation to shape its future policies regarding older workers and retirement, particularly in the context of the demise of the DRA (default retirement age). Options consist of an initial half day 1-1 session with the person responsible for retirement policy, or a one day workshop with key stakeholders as appropriate. Either session steps through all the key issues and opportunities, for both organisation and individuals, associated with retirement and managing older employees. In particular it looks at the additional challenges as a result of removal of the default retirement age. It enables the participant(s) to identify and understand the issues and the options for addressing these and to start shaping the future policy of the organisation. It includes looking at how this discontinuity can also be used as an opportunity for adding value to the business. More information is available on both these services in the form of service descriptions which describe the content.
